When Should I Upgrade My HVAC System?

January 20, 2026 by Richmond’s Air

When Should I Upgrade My HVAC System?

A new HVAC system is a big investment, but it may be worth it even if your system hasn’t completely died yet.

An HVAC system’s lifespan is usually between 10-15 years, but as it gets older, it can become less efficient and require more repairs. Regular preventative maintenance is essential for extending the life and efficiency of your system.

Looking to replace your HVAC?

The local Houston heating and cooling experts at Richmond’s Air have installed thousands of residential HVAC systems across the Houston metro area.

Contact us today to get a free estimate on repairing or replacing your home’s HVAC. Financing options are also available.

When should you upgrade your HVAC system?

Below are 5 signs that it might be time to buy a new HVAC for your home:

  1. It’s at least 10 years old. Some things get better as they age—an HVAC system, unfortunately, isn’t one of them. A furnace tends to last a little longer than an AC, but it’s usually advised to replace the whole thing at once to make sure they work well together.
  2. You’re often too hot or too cold. If you find that your AC isn’t keeping up with Houston summers and your furnace can’t keep your home warm enough during the winter, your system may be on its last legs. It also may not be the correct load for the size of your home, so make sure to research what your home needs before you buy a new system.
  3. It requires frequent repairs. Regular maintenance is important and necessary for HVAC systems, especially older ones, and some repairs are inevitable on aging systems. But if you have your HVAC company on speed dial, it may be time to think about another solution.
  4. Your system runs constantly. Efficiency can dwindle with age, so if you find that your HVAC system is constantly turning on and off, or running the majority of the time, it’s probably wasting energy and costing you more money.
  5. Your indoor air quality is declining. Over time, an older HVAC system may struggle to keep up with allergens and pollutants in the air. Since one of its main jobs is to keep your home well ventilated, a failing system can create more problems with allergies, asthma and sickness.

Before you make your decision, you’ll also want to have a certified HVAC technician take a look at your ductwork, thermostat and home insulation. If there are any major leaks or issues with your thermostat, replacing your HVAC system may not be the answer.

FAQs about buying a new HVAC in Houston

What is the 5,000 dollar rule in HVAC?

The $5,000 rule in HVAC is a simple guideline homeowners use to decide whether it makes more financial sense to repair or replace an aging heating or cooling system.

Here’s how the rule works:

  • Multiply the age of your HVAC unit (in years) by the estimated repair cost.
  • If the total is more than $5,000, replacement is usually the better long-term option.
  • If the total is less than $5,000, repairing the system may be worth it.

For example:

  • A 10-year-old air conditioner that needs a $600 repair equals $6,000 (10 × 600).
  • Because that number exceeds $5,000, replacing the unit is often the smarter investment.

The rule isn’t absolute. A repair may still make sense if the system is otherwise in good condition, energy-efficient, and has not required frequent fixes. On the other hand, even a smaller repair may not be worth it if the unit is near the end of its lifespan or has ongoing performance issues.

The $5,000 rule is best used as a decision-making tool, not a strict requirement. A trusted Houston AC/heating repair company can help you weigh repair costs, energy savings, warranty coverage, and long-term reliability before deciding.

How much should it cost to replace an HVAC system in Houston?

In Houston, the cost to replace an HVAC system typically ranges from $5,000 to $12,000, though the final price can fall outside that range depending on several factors.

So, what influences the cost?

  • Home size and layout. Larger homes or multi-story layouts usually require higher-capacity systems and more labor.
  • System type and efficiency. The type of HVAC you choose impacts the bottom line now and in years to come. Higher-efficiency systems cost more upfront but can significantly reduce monthly energy bills.
  • Ductwork condition. If ducts need repair, sealing, or replacement, that will add to the total cost.
  • Installation complexity. Tight spaces, attic installs, or older homes can increase labor time.
  • Permits and local requirements. Houston-area codes and permitting can affect pricing.

While replacing an HVAC system is a major investment, modern energy-efficient units can reduce cooling and heating costs by up to 50%, which helps offset the initial expense over time—especially in Houston’s long, hot summers.

If you’re trying to budget, compare options, or explore financing, Richmond’s Air offers free estimates and guidance to help homeowners choose a system that fits both their comfort needs and their budget.

Humidifier vs. Dehumidifier: Babies

October 9, 2017 by Richmond’s Air

When you begin prepping your home for a new baby, there are many factors to consider. Supplies like bottles, clothes and diapers are likely high on your list, but have you thought about a whole home humidifier or dehumidifier?

Maintaining healthy humidity levels in your home is important regardless, but with a baby it becomes even more significant since dry or humid air can accelerate potential health problems. Air that’s too humid can increase the growth of mold and other allergens, while dry air can cause coughing or colds.

So how can you tell which is right for your baby?

Take a Look at Where You Live

The first step in deciding between a humidifier and dehumidifier for your baby is to take a look at the air quality where you live. Some locations have higher humidity than others. It’s also important to consider the time of year. The winter months are likely to bring much drier air than summer.

Dehumidifier or Humidifier?

As you probably know, dehumidifiers take moisture out of the air while humidifiers put more moisture back into it.

Dehumidifiers are designed to help control mold growth, bacteria and dust mites from overly humid spaces like basements. Many agree that unless your baby is sleeping in a basement room or your home is not equipped with air conditioning, a dehumidifier may not be a necessary purchase for your baby.

Humidifiers, on the other hand, put moisture into air when it’s too dry. The dry air in the winter and the constant air conditioner running in the summer can cause the air in your home to become drier than you think. Babies are more susceptible than adults to dry sinuses, dry skin, stuffy noses and other symptoms associated with low humidity. A humidifier can help your baby sleep through the night as well as avoid dry skin and respiratory problems all year long.

Humidifier vs. Dehumidifier: Nosebleeds

July 20, 2017 by Richmond’s Air

So many Americans suffer from frequent nosebleeds every year, and relief can sometimes be hard to come by.

Most people already know that a humidifier adds humidity to your home’s air while a dehumidifier takes it away. However, many aren’t sure which is best for their annoying symptoms.

The fact is, in the face of nosebleeds, most experts recommend a whole-house humidifier to help.

What Causes Nosebleeds?

In the winter especially, the dry air in your home can cause a number of annoying symptoms including dry skin irritation, cracked lips, dry eyes and even nosebleeds.

Low humidity means that the natural moisture of your nose is evaporated. The dryness can negatively affect the sensitive nasal blood vessels and, therefore, cause nosebleeds. While nosebleeds can have many causes, dry air is the most common.

How Humidifiers Help

Humidifiers serve to place humidity back into the air so that your home’s levels remain healthy. Human skin requires around 30-40% humidity in order to stay healthy. Using a humidifier to reach this level can not only improve symptoms of nosebleeds, but prevent them from occurring at all.

Moist sinuses will help protect the sensitive nasal blood vessels from rupturing. Additionally, it is more difficult for bacteria and viruses to travel through nasal passages that are moist. This means that a humidifier can help individuals heal from colds as well.

Humidifiers and dehumidifiers offer a wide array of health benefits for users. If you are interested in incorporating a humidifier or dehumidifier into your home’s system, Richmond’s Air is ready to help. We offer a wide array of HVAC services to help keep your home as comfortable as possible. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Humidifier vs. Dehumidifier: Allergies, Colds, Nasal Congestion & Snoring

July 6, 2017 by Richmond’s Air

If you regularly suffer from allergies or snoring, or if this cold season just dealt you a bad lot, you may have considered getting either a humidifier or dehumidifier to help alleviate the annoying symptoms.

Some people already know that a humidifier puts moisture into the air while a dehumidifier dries it out; however, many people aren’t sure which device is best for their condition.

The answer lies in each individual’s needs and symptoms. Here, we’ll take a look at both humidifiers and dehumidifiers and when they can help.

Benefits of humidifiers

As said above, humidifiers put moisture back into the air. Dry air is most common during the winter months, and low air humidity (below 35%) can cause sinus headaches, nosebleeds and asthma flares.

A humidifier can help with these symptoms; however, there are some precautions to take. For example, it’s important to make sure that the humidity in your home does not exceed 50%. Higher humidity could increase dust mites and mold growth in your home and cause a whole new set of debilitating symptoms.

When it comes to colds, most believe that humidifiers are the way to go since drier air can irritate your nose and throat, making it harder to relieve congestion and pressure.

Does using a humidifier help with snoring?

For many people, nasal congestion and allergies can cause snoring, and these conditions are only made worse if the air in your home is too dry. Dry air can further irritate your nasal passages and increase allergy symptoms. This irritation can also cause snoring to intensify.

A humidifier adds moisture to your air until ideal levels are reached (between 40-50%). This increase in humidity can help sooth your airways, reduce inflammation and potentially stop snoring.

Humidifiers do not help every case of snoring, so be sure to speak to your doctor if you feel your snoring is being caused by an ongoing medical issue.

Benefits of dehumidifiers

Dehumidifiers take moisture out of the air and protect your home from mold growth or thriving dust mites, both of which can trigger allergy symptoms. Dehumidifiers are also said to clear up allergy-related mucous secretions faster.

Again, it’s important not to let the humidity in your home drop below 35% since other allergy symptoms can flare under these conditions.

Overall, whether a humidifier or dehumidifier is best for your snoring or allergy/cold symptoms greatly depends on the cause. If you are interested in further improving the quality of your home’s air, talk to a professional Katy HVAC technician at Richmond’s Air today for more information.

Choosing the Best HVAC System For Your Home

April 21, 2017 by Richmond’s Air

Choosing an HVAC system is not an easy task, but factors like climate and home layout can help you decide which is best for your home. Let’s take a look at the four major types of HVAC systems and the advantages of each one.

1. Standard split systems

Standard split systems can be configured in several ways to give you more options: furnace and A/C, heat pump split systems and hybrid (or dual fuel) heat systems. Standard split systems continue to be the most affordable and most popular type of HVAC system. If one component needs to be replaced, a new one can be easily installed without any major changes to the existing ductwork or other AC components.

2. Ductless split systems

If your home doesn’t have any ductwork or you’re building on an additional room, a ductless split system (or mini-split system) may be the way to go. This type of system has an air conditioner or a heat pump outside and a fan to distribute the air on the inside. These systems are very efficient and have the option of zone climate control, but they aren’t made for cold climates because a ductless split system cannot host a furnace.

3. Packaged systems

A packaged system, like the name suggests, is contained in one big cabinet outside. Pros for this system include cutting down on noise inside your home, but cons are that the system is not as efficient and doesn’t tend to last as long. Packaged systems are usually only used when they’re the only option available.

4. Geothermal HVAC systems

Geothermal HVAC systems cost quite a bit more than the other three systems, but they save on energy costs because they are extremely efficient. A geothermal system works by regulating temperatures via an underground or underwater pipe. Water containing refrigerant then cycles through the pipes, giving off or picking up heat, depending on the season.

Since buying an HVAC system is a big investment, don’t choose one until you’ve talked to an experience HVAC professional. If you live in the Houston area, contact Richmond’s Air today.
